Only a purist who really wants to learn how to draw very well could appreciate this book. Bargue crystallized a method to learn drawing about 150 yrs. ago and many great artists used his method. Being a committed watercolorist for 3 yrs., and an old guy, I decided to accept the advice of a fine artist who said, "You paint well but you need to draw a lot better, especially if you want to do lifelike faces." I do, and I'm working on it. Funny about living a long time - although there's less time left in my life, I feel more able to be patient in such endeavors.

Excellent resource for learning atelier drawing methods. In addition to the book, however, you will also require some additional course instruction and there are excellent free resources on line. The aim of this book is a worthy one. To help those who wish to learn to draw by the older atelier/academic method. It is a beautiful book and I am glad that I have it. But unfortunately there are a few problems with it.First is that the plates are way too small to be useable for sight size drawing. In order to use the book for practice you have to lay it open on a copy machine to copy the images. They also have to be enlarged for them to be of any use, which usually involves taping several sheets together to get an image large enough.Second is that copying the book in this manner means that you ruin the binding on the spine. Mine basically broke the first time I did any copying.Third is that the plates that are reproduced are not in really great condition. They have staining and other signs of age that make the process of drawing them accurately much more difficult than it should be.To be a really functional tool for drawing practice at least some of the plates should have been cleaned up, printed separately as loose pages, and available full size. Or they should be included in a digital format, so that they can be printed full size without all the jumping through hoops that the present book requires.So if you want a beautiful coffee table book about the Barge drawing course this is it. But if you are actually going to use the book I would suggest that you try to find the least expensive copy you can get, since you will destroy the value of the book during copying.As a side note, there is an e-version of this information that is available online in digital form with plates that have been restored and are in a high resolution format, videos, etc at less than half the cost. I haven't checked it out yet, but I do plan on doing so.

The book is 25 x 27cm in size.The writer Gerald Ackerman is an art historian who went to Florence to study how to use this course at the atelier of Daniel Graves and Charles Cecil before writing this book.You can find all the Charles Bargue 197 plates in this book, with instructions on how to use them.Vol 1 plates are all whole-page drawings.Vol 2 plates are over 80% whole-page drawings.Vol 3 has only about 20 full-page illustrations and the rest are pretty tiny. Despite this shortfall, I still consider it a great book to have.The book also talks about Charles Bargue's life and his awesome paintings (in his later years).It is interesting to know that van Gogh worked through this course more than once on his own and Picasso copied these plates at the Barcelona Academy.This is one of the few drawing books that I find truly worth my money.

This book is perfect for the content strategist who needs help running their first (or 50th) projects. The downloadable worksheets are extremely helpful, and while you may not use everything in here, I promise you will be referring to it constantly.

I have read most of the available books on content strategy. I've enjoyed all of them and benefited from their advice when working on site redesigns and migrations. Yet, I still longed for a resource that more effectively combined practice information with the tools and tactics underlying the strategy.Meghan Casey's book is exactly what I needed. She explains each process step concisely but thoroughly. She suggests variations based on available time, budget, and resources. She then says "now download and use Tool X at [URL]." Where appropriate, she sometimes recommends that the same or slightly altered version of a tool be used again in a later step.I enjoyed Meaghan's conversational tone. Reading this book is like having a coach. Even if you have a zillion books on content strategy, I recommend that you add The Content Strategy Toolkit to your library.

Excellent book for those who want to be guided through the content strategy process. From getting your stakeholder buy-in to creating and executing the strategy, it's all here. I got this book immediately after sitting in a workshop with the author, Meghan Casey. She's great and very knowledgeable. The perfect tool for content marketers!

Practical and useful. I have been applying some of the techniques and insights in my work. Ms. Casey is also a terrific instructor/speaker in-person. I was fortunate to have taken a full-day course with her and got a lot out of it.

Meghan Casey's The Content Strategy Toolkit delivers what it promises: a well-structured, content-rich set of tools for content strategy practitioners both novice and advanced. I appreciate the practicality of this book. The author organizes her thoughts into a linear, logical flow, communicated in useful bullet-points, making it easy to browse and read.Casey packs her book with a workshop full of well-crafted and useful content strategy tools, including a stakeholder matrix, project kick-off email, project team matrix, session plan and even a sample agenda.In addition to these many tools, Casey offers clear directions for mapping out stakeholders processes, artifacts and deliverables; project management guidance, including timeline, material, reporting and rhythms and a strong overview of the content inventory, auditing, and mapping process.Casey also pays close attention to the stakeholder interview process, including questions and documentation review process notes. These notes culminate in building a discovery inside workbook incorporating best practices from UX design, market research, and general business consulting.While this may seem like an overwhelming amount of material to keep under control, Casey does a good job of aligning all the parts into a strategic framework that ties everything together, from the beginning of the process through the resulting outputs and actions.Casey offers a nod to Sara Wachter-Boettcher’s book Content Everywhere in her overview of structured content and entering content into the CMS.Her content types and components tend to be large, chunky, and high-level -- so it's at this level a high level introduction to modelling.The book does have a tendency to focus on personal and in-person outputs and processes involving sticky notes and whiteboards best suited for traditional and co-located teams, and not much guidance is offered on how to apply the same processes in distributed environments. It may be that content strategy is a full-contact sport, but the nature of business is increasingly distributed, and content strategists should be prepared to embrace various kinds of collaboration.As a content engineer, I also would have appreciated seeing more about content modeling. Casey does reference Rachel Lovinger’s article on the A List Apart website, but largely breezes over structured content and content modeling. Content strategists should embrace and understand content modeling as a core competency, even though content engineers should ultimately own and maintain the content model in collaboration with IT and development stakeholders. The content strategists who are equipped to natively understand and be able to contribute to content models will do their clients great service by contributing to content reuse structure.Casey wraps up her book with a very helpful outline of content governance, editorial management, and other content maintenance topics. She also provides a list of all the tools used in the book, though I wish she had also included additional references to third-party materials and resources for students.All in all, I give The Content Strategy Toolkit: Methods, Guidelines, and Templates for Getting Content Right five stars, because I believe it to be a practical, essential part of a content strategy bookshelf, and a strong orientation to anybody getting into the field. I absolutely loved the book, and though it was a bit hard to follow at times because of odd time-jumps, it was a nice read. There were a few confusing points in the book where I wasn’t quite sure who was lying or what was real, but i suppose that might have been the point. It expressed was a lot of uncertainty about the world, which was a nice change, as opposed to books where the character feels at home. That seems to be a major point of the novel - she doesn’t feel at home. I think a younger teenage me would’ve absolutely loved it, so if you’re looking for something for an angsty teen, this could be a good one.It came with a different cover than in the pictures, which threw me off a bit.

I really wish there were more books like this one.The mood is perfect.The art is so simple that it conveys so much.If there are other books like this in pace, weirdness, and simplicity... please let me know.Like create a telepathic link and let me know, or... send a cat.same thing.

The main character was the most relatable I've read in recent memory. Very introspective. Very unexpected. I'm finding it hard to describe what's so good about this story. It does something positive with depression without seeming patronizing or saccharine-sweet at all. (I'm not saying the main character is def. clinically depressed in canon, but, it is a reasonable interpretation imho.)

Having come to Bryan Lee O'Malley's work via the often-frenetic Scott Pilgrim (first the fun film, then the amazing comic), I wasn't sure that Lost at Sea would be up my alley. Turns out that it was - it's a engaging, melancholy meditation on the uncertainty of being a young adult, and what that means about the relationships around you.I personally find the minimalist approach to the color very appealing and appropriate to the story.If you like the quieter moments of Blue Monday or Penny & Aggie, then I recommend Lost at Sea.

Bryan Lee O'Malley, of Scott Pilgrim fame (Scott Pilgrims Precious Little Boxset), shows off his skills of giving characters depth and realism in this graphic novel, Lost At Sea. While written by O'Malley, it is obvious to see that this book is in a completely different style from Scott Pilgrim. This story is told in the first person, which allows you to see the depth of the introverted Raleigh and her mind.In short, if you are buying this book expecting it to be like Scott Pilgrim, you wont get what you want out of it. That said, this graphic novel is definitely worth your time and money.

If you've read Scott Pilgrim, I recommend that you leave all of your preconceived notions about O'Malley at the door before you read this book. Other than the artwork, this book is nothing like that series. If you're expecting some cutesy book, you're in the wrong place.Lost at Sea follows the character of Raleigh, an overly timid young teen who is completely at a loss as to who she is. She claims to have no soul, a result of certain actions occurring in her youth. Raleigh finds herself on a car trip with three of her classmates at her school, unsure as to how to interact with them. But as the miles pass by, Raleigh will find herself opening up to her fellow passengers about herself, her doubts & her life.I really loved this book. I'll admit, it was a bit slow to get into, but it really was a fantastic read. The artwork is all wonderful, which is something I've come to expect from O'Malley throughout the years. I loved how some of the most serious issues in the book- most notably the one major reason why Raleigh is the way she is- are all done subtly. It's up to the reader as to whether or not they pick up on the smaller details. If you aren't careful, you'll miss an entire element of the book that'll take the story to a whole new level.I would honestly recommend this to anyone who loves a good indie comic. Again, I'll warn the Scott Pilgrim fans that this is a very serious book, so if you are looking for laughs & cute stuff, you may want to pass this one by. I hope you give it a real chance, as this truly is a book worth reading & sharing with your friends. One thing I'll add to this review is that if you like his work, you should also check out his work in the Hopeless-Savages series.

Bryan Lee O'Malley really has his way on talking about teenagehood.I read Lost at Sea after reading Scott Pilgrim and Seconds and I must say I like it slightly less then his other two works. But that doesn't make it a bad novel - far from it.Raleigh is a standard teenager, with all the fears and doubts that comes with this period of ife, and deals with the relationship with some near-strangers on a road trip, while understands a little more about herself and how she is less soulless than she thinks.The "fantasy" element is a lot less present on this work (comparing to SP and Seconds) and the narrative style is far more traditional than the typical "Bryan Lee O'Malley" that we all love. But still this comic is worth your time.

The story takes a little while to take off, but it has really great pay off. I would definitely recommend this comic to people that like reading more personal stories about people interactions. This is not at all similar to any superhero, fantasy, or action comic you have read in the past. I could see someone adapting this into a good indie film some day.
