Das Buch „Prozess- und Anlagensicherheit“ von Prof. Ulrich Hauptmanns beschreibt vollständig und umfassend, wie eine „sichere Prozessanlage ausgelegt werden muss, der Stand von Technik und Sicherheitstechnik umgesetzt werden, und wie sich  beides (der Stand von Technik und Sicherheitstechnik) in Zukunft verbessern und weiterentwickeln lässt.

Das Buch breitet die Theorie der Sicherheitstechnik in vollem Umfang vor dem Leser aus. Das geschieht zum einen durch eine gut verständliche theoretische Darstellung, aber besonders auch durch die zahlreichen praktischen Beispiele, Beispielrechnungen und Fallstudien,  die dem Leser eine wünschenswerte Vertiefung der Theorie in der praktischen Umsetzung ermöglichen. Hilfreich sind hier auch die zahlreichen, gut recherchierten und aktuellen Quellenangaben und Querverweise.

Hervorzuheben sind unter den vielen behandelten die Themen die probabilistische Behandlung der Anlagensicherheit  und der  Risikoermittlung. Hier gibt das Buch eine sehr umfassende und vollständige Darstellung des aktuellen Wissens und Diskussionsstandes, die man an anderer Stelle wohl so nicht finden kann. Störfälle in technischen Anlagen sind Zufallsereignisse; deshalb kann man sie nicht gänzlich vermeiden. Wohl aber lassen sich die Wahrscheinlichkeit ihres Auftretens und das Schadensausmaß verringern. Im Buch werden ausgehend von Gefährdungen durch Stoffe und Betriebsbedingungen mögliche technische und organisatorische Maßnahmen  aufgezeigt, Gefährdungen zu mindern. Qualitative Analysemethoden zum Auffinden von Schwachstellen und zur Erhöhung der Sicherheit sowie Modelle zur Abschätzung von Störfallfolgen werden dargestellt.  Die quantitative Bewertung der Wirksamkeit von Maßnahmen zur Verbesserung von Anlagentechnik und Sicherheit wird erläutert.  Dabei spielen Unsicherheiten eine Rolle; sie folgen  aus dem Zufallscharakter des Störfalls und aus Kenntnislücken bei einigen der zu behandelnden Phänomene. Der Leser wird mit Methoden der Störfallsimulation sowie Sicherheits- und Risikoanalysen vertraut gemacht und lernt, Möglichkeiten und Grenzen mathematischer Modellierung einzuschätzen. Ulrich Hauptmanns, Studium und Promotion in Kernreaktorphysik an der TU Berlin, Störfallanalyse zum THTR-300, Gastdozent des DAAD am Lehrstuhl für Verfahrenstechnik der Universität von Oviedo (Spanien), langjährige Tätigkeit bei der Gesellschaft für Anlagen- und Reaktorsicherheit (GRS). Habilitation an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum für das Gebiet Sicherheit und Zuverlässigkeit technischer Anlagen. Bis 2011 Lehrstuhl für Anlagensicherheit an der Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg, 12 Jahre lang Mitglied der Störfallkommission und Kommission für Anlagensicherheit.
