The methodology described in the book is dynamic not static so it is amendable, can be updated by purchasers as well. I really suggest this book to any kind of purchaser (junior or very senior) or any related party doing business with purchasing.

Many books promise to show how to create value in a supply chain, yet they mostly feel to be lacking when push comes to shove. Although the reader may be kept fairly engaged and active consuming and contemplating the advice dispensed within the book as it is!

Strategic Sourcing and Category Management: Lessons Learned at IKEA by Magnus Carlsson (KoganPage, August 2015) is not a case study, although I didn’t need the note from the author in the introduction to know that. The author may have spent 25 years at IKEA, working in strategic sourcing, but this is less a story of one company and more the learnings gained by one professional over 2.5 decades in a competitive environment.Like any other book I review or event I attend, my focus in reading this book was to cull out the important ideas: what are the few take aways that really stand out as unique? There are quite a few in this book, any of which will improve the maturity and results of your procurement organization. I think this book is fantastic – full of great new ideas and ways to implement them.Category ManagementThe first question that might come to mind is ‘how does the author suggest we segment our spend or supply base to get the best results from category management?’ He advocates segmentation by manufacturing process – and yet he introduces the idea that the processes he is accustomed to are different than the ones most commonly seen. The steps in any process must be allowed to influence each other – not just downstream, but back and forth. This philosophy brings the entire process to life and pushes those managing it to emphasize agility and flexibility.Several of the take-aways I detail below provide examples of where learning something or changing a requirement must be allowed to affect the trajectory of the project no matter how far through the process it is. That being said, Carlsson does not suggest that processes should be ‘loose’. In fact, he explains that the difference is in the details – the difference between mostly getting a process right and actually getting it right may be small in percentage of the total effort, but will be significant as a percentage of the results.Influence v. PowerThis is big – first of all, knowing the difference between the two and second of all being able to build and wield both.Influence is like BATNA outside of a negotiation. You strengthen it by increasing your options. If a company (or individual) can create and define a reason for suppliers to give them something others can’t access, they have influence. Another way of looking at it is increasing control over one’s environment. It is important to note that volume of demand does not automatically create influence. This provides someone with the option to improve results without violating the popular collaboration paradigm.While Influence incentivizes desired behavior by offering something of value in return, power makes it happen through leverage. There is more force to a power-based approach.Market DiagnosisAnother critical idea. As Carlsson says, “locate the money.” Market diagnosis should be conducted early enough in a project that the findings can be allowed to shape the resulting sourcing efforts. Always look at the difference between what high margin/cost suppliers provide and what lower cost suppliers provide. High price suppliers have found a way to deliver value added services, and low cost suppliers have found a way to be efficient. The right answer is likely somewhere between the two, and there is something important to be learned from both.If there aren’t enough viable alternatives in your project, re-engineer the offering to make them viable. Maybe your requirements are more the issue than what is available in the market. Understand the role that different cost types (fixed/variable/unit-based/overhead) as well as material vs. process costs have on the value created for your consumers. Start with cost calculations and then move to a value analysis which combines costs and consumer benefits.

About the Author
DAVID LAVALLEE is Head of the School of Sport at the University of Stirling, UK. His principal areas of interest include self identity and coping processes in sport and exercise, psychology of sport injury, retirement from sport, athlete and coach burnout, and eating disorders in sport.

JOHN KREMER is Reader in Applied Social Psychology at Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland. He is Module Co-ordinator for Social and Applied Psychology and Sport and Exercise Psychology. His research interests include equality and diversity at work and sport and exercise psychology.

AIDAN MORAN is Professor of Cognitive Psychology in the School of Psychology at University College, Dublin, Ireland. He has published extensively in cognitive psychology (mental imagery, eye-tracking) and sport psychology (mental practice, concentration) and is particularly interested in the use of psychological techniques to improve people's concentration skills and performance. A consultant to many of Ireland's leading professional sports performers and teams, he is a former Official Psychologist to the Irish Olympic Squad.

Don McCauley has coached Olympic Weightlifting, Powerlifting, Throwing, and Strength and Conditioning with several sports, for almost thirty years. In that time he has produced athletes that have competed at the national and international level, including the Olympics.
He has competed in the sports of Track&Field as a middle distance runner, Road Running, Olympic Weightlifting and Powerlifting. He is most proud of his best 10-mile race time of 59:32.
Don graduated from the University of Rhode Island, is a C.S.C.S., a Level 1 Track & Field Coach and is certified by CrossFit and Cross- Fit for Kids. He presently works for Performance Initiatives as the Coach of the Coastal Empire Weightlifting team and owns a CrossFit box in Savannah, Georgia.
He is on the Ethics Committee of the USAW (Olympic Weightlifting NGB) and has a long-standing teaching relationship with many athletes in that sport. He is active in hosting weightlifting clinics and camps for athletes and coaches at the Performance Initiatives gym.

The power and beauty of Atwood's writing is remarkable as is the story she tells. There are so many connections and interconnections, and all of them are interwoven delicately and seamlessly.Unlike some successful authors, Atwood never repeats her ideas from one book to the next but each novel is a new journey in which you're always fully immersed in the lives of the characters. Cat's Eye is no different in this respect and I was completely absorbed from start to end.I particularly liked the depiction of the child's world as one in which you observe but can't quite intervene; how this moves into the teenage years when a quiet but cruel form of revenge is exacted in a precise and self-conscious way; the relationship with the narrator's brother is drawn through perfectly concise details, with just enough information provided but never too much.This reflects another impressive feature of the novel in that there's nothing redundant in this story. Everything has a reason to be there and Atwood's skill at this level is immense. She's a brilliant writer and Cat's Eye is simply further proof of this. To say I stand in awe of her abilities and the impact her work makes on my life is a vast understatement. She is, quite simply, brilliant.

This is a book for an older person. The protagonist is around age 50 and returns to the city where she grew up for a retrospective show of her paintings, which are all about her life and the people she knew. She is now walking down the streets she walked as a child and adolescent, and all her paintings are now hanging in one room. She is also staying in the art studio of her former husband. The story is a potent emotional voyage of the past and the undigested experiences she is dealing with, as well as her own aging body. My favorite part was her experience of being bullied as a child by her “friends,” and how she finally rose above that and found her personal power. For women in particular, it can take decades before we stop giving away our power, if ever. I was profoundly sad after reading this book, but it also served as a catharsis, as I realized that we are all haunted by our memories, miss the old friends who have left our life, struggle to forgive those who have abused and betrayed us, and continually mourn our loved ones who passed away. This is the true burden of aging: our memories.

Atwood has an uncanny ability to dwell in the shoes of the protagonist whether child, teen, or adult. In Cat's Eye, she inhabits all stages of life. The child Elaine is small for her age, inquisitive, and bullied. A The same classmates who befriended the new girl are the ones who make her feel worthless mentally, physically, and socially. While the two girls resume their friendship in high school, the dynamic of their childhood friendship never returns and the balance of power even shifts, over time, so that it favors Elaine.Despite Elaine's success in art and love, she has never come to terms with her relationship with Cordelia. "Cat's Eye" follows Elaine's search for Cordelia and the path that Elaine follows as she tries to understand their "friendship."Elaine herself is a dark character, as she tends to have a solemn outlook on life and never seems to display happiness. Her pensive nature leads to interesting observations on the meaning of her art and how the avant garde work resulted from her early childhood experiences. Elaine's reflections also allow the reader to follow the interactions between Elaine's parents, brother, and herself; her introduction to religion; her first experiences with art; and her experiences with the opposite sex. While this book isn't easy to read, as Atwood writes in great detail and the pace of the book moves slowly, Elaine's reflections are interesting and the way she overcomes Cordelia's evil spell leads one to believe that good can prevail over evil.
